Excuses Excuses

posted Monday, 7 January 2008

We all find ourselves obliged to do things we would rather avoid, like paying income tax or becoming involved in voluntary work.  It helps to rehearse some good excuses so when duty calls, you have the perfect justification for not stepping up to the mark.

Generally, the greater the expectation on you the more elaborate the excuse needs to be.
For example whilst you can avoid going to the gym easily enough by feigning diphtheria,  avoiding your best friend’s wedding requires a more inventive excuse, like pretending to be possessed by the devil.

With practise almost anyone can become a skilled excuser, but it’s important to recognise potential pitfalls: don’t claim to be bitten by poisonous frogs more than three times a week, and attempts to avoid going to a funeral by dying never work.
